Orthodontics….At Any Age.

OrthodonticsOrthodontics can create broad, beautiful smiles and faces at any age. Dr. Crary uses what is known as the functional philosophy for treating both adults and children. This involves the development of the upper and lower arches to make room for all of the teeth, eliminating the need for extraction of permanent teeth. This results in the narrow, pre- treatment smile being transformed into a broad, beautiful smile following arch development. Dr. Crary also uses functional jaw repositioning appliances to gently move the lower jaw forward in cases where patients present with a receding lower jaw or jaw joint (TMJ) problems. This results in not only a more attractive facial profile, but also healthier jaw joints. Dr. Crary often uses functional and neuromuscular orthodontics for final stabilization of the bite in patients who come to her for TMJ therapy.

Our children deserve to have broad, beautiful smiles and healthy jaw joints! Children should be evaluated by the age of 5 to screen for potential problems in jaw development. Early treatment can help ensure proper development of the width of the upper and lower jaws, and prevent extraction of permanent teeth down the road. It also can prevent impactions of permanent teeth (the “fang” look), and help to eliminate thumb-sucking, abnormal speech, and swallowing habits. In other words, early intervention in children can solve many problems and prevent more costly and involved procedures later on. Because 90 percent of facial development has already occurred by the age of 12, waiting until this time to begin treatment can cause less than ideal results.

Many children with narrow jaws, deep overbites, and receding lower jaws have unhealthy jaw joints (TMJs), which can cause:
